Homemade Moon Dough

Moon Dough or Moon Sand had become a staple in our house.  If you read my past post on Homemade Play Dough you know that I would rather make my own product then pay for it in the store.  Moon Dough/Moon Sand is a great product that my boys love, but very expensive.  I have been searching for a suitable recipe and finally feel like I have recreated Moon Dough at a fraction of the cost.

I no longer cook with bleached flour or canola oil, but I never got rid of my old baking supplies.  I hate to waste food and knew that someday these products would be useful. Good thing I kept them because they were perfect for my Moon Dough.

Homemade Moon Dough
8 cups of all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups of canola oil
3-4 drops of food coloring (optional)

-combine ingredients in a large bowl
-mix with a large spoon or just dig in and knead with your hands
-place dough on a suitable play surface and let the kids go wild!

Homemade Moon Dough is such a fun play medium.  When you squeeze a clump together it sticks and makes a great tool for building and cutting. It is also light enough that you do not need to roll it out to make a flat surface.  Big C loves to use it as “terrain” for his massive military battles.  Trenches, hills, bunkers, fox holes…there is nothing that can’t be made with Homemade Moon Dough.  Make sure to store in an airtight container when you are done.  Moon Dough will keep for 2-3 months.  Enjoy!
