Baby It's Cold Outside

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:  it is the time for home.  ~Edith Sitwell

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday with their loved ones and is gearing up to ring in the New Year.  These pictures were taken on my Christmas walk with my son, Big C.  Colorado has been blanketed with a fresh winters powder and it has happily forced me to stay inside and savour this time with my family.  I hope that you enjoy the rest of 2011 and I am excited to really start Throwback Road in 2012.  Happy New Year!

Homemade Holidays

Hope you are enjoying your holiday as much as I am. The kitchen is constantly in baking mode and the broom is getting its fair share of work sweeping up little bits of Christmas off the floor. Here are some things we have been working on at Throwback Road. Tis the season to create and be together. Cheers!

Welcome to Throwback Road

Hello world! Welcome to Throwback Road. I am so excited to finally start this journey. First things first.....let me introduce myself.

My name is Julia and I am a 30-something mother of two boys living outside of Denver, CO. I have been married to my husband for almost ten years and currently I am a "homemaker".

That title really hit home for me when I quit my job 5 months ago to stay at home with my two boys. What really was a homemaker in today's society? We have everything at our fingertips.....big box grocery stores with every type of food imaginable, vacuum machines, clothing stores, washer and dryers, take out food, ipads, TVs, video games...you catch my drift. I began to think about if I had the skills to take care of my family if none of those things existed. Could I make food from scratch...lets take it one step further, could I grow the food that would in turn feed my family? These are all skills that were once past down from generation to generation, but have been lost in the shuffle of this very busy world.

This is our attempt to change that cycle in our family. We have taken the challenge to "Throwback" and learn the skills that once were the basic survival skills of every American family. We will learn how to heirloom garden, knit, sew, preserve food, hunt, and live a much simpler life. We will teach these skills to our boys who will in turn hopefully teach their children. This life change has been a long time coming and we are very excited to embark on it. Please join us, learn along with us, and I am sure laugh at us as we learn the basics of everyday living. Welcome to Throwback Road!
